Thinly Veiled Ravens

It smelled of metal and gunpowder

Spicy and toxic

coupled with bloodshot eyes

fingers twitching

alight with anticipation

My body thrummed

with the excitement

that only comes when

blood is shed

A timid strike is what broke me

a gentle tapping

rapping at

my chamber door

Obscurity is the only thing

that’s ever given us warmth

it envelopes us

spreading over our skin

With no words at all to share

But what would we have said anyways?

It would have been

crippled vows

some cloying distortions

Like

striking a match against concrete

with no fire to rival

We laid there

as if we were taking our

very last breaths

and it very much felt that way
