sunshine state

I keep telling myself-

don’t think don’t think

because if I do, I start remembering the shape

of her face, how she laughed. I could hear

her smile through the receiver of my phone.

The color of her hair like crushed

pomegranates; she would ask me-

should I go back to this hue?

I couldn’t have seen her in any other.

And her laugh, oh her laugh, it was like

the sun making its way through the clouds.

She was like wind rustling tree leaves,

bare feet kicking up sand.

It was moments between saying-

yes we’ll meet then, yes I miss you too,

why did you move so far away?

This pain, oh this pain,

if I could marry a hurt like that,

maybe she wouldn’t have ever gone away.
